The Road to Scholarships

tips and hints for junior high & high school students planning to use scholarship monies to pay for their continuing education

Middle School Students and Scholarships

Today’s blog is strictly for my regulars. Students in middle school through high school sophomores.  Today, you’ll learn why early preparation is beneficial.

Meet, Dulce Munoz. Dulce is a North Carolina middle school student, who is receiving a scholarship worth up to $20,000. You can read more about Dulce, and the other students who also received this award here.

When reading about the award, don’t disregard it because it’s in North Carolina and you’re not, it’s not a lump sum scholarship, or because the recipients must be nominated by their counselors.

Yes, this award is limited to students in North Carolina. However, that doesn’t mean there are similar possibilities in your state. Hopefully, Dulce’s beginning success will encourage you to look for scholarship possibilities in your area.

No, this is not a lump sum scholarship. Dulce and the other recipients will receive $2000 a year, as long as they continue to meet the qualifications. There are often scholarship opportunities students must continue to qualify to receive. Oklahoma, for example has OHLAP, or PROMISE. Students must sign up to receive this monetary benefit before the 10th grade. However, they must continue to meet the qualification standards through out their high school years in order to receive the money.

Yes, this particular scholarship is dependent on counselors submitting their students’ names. There are others that require a nomination from a teacher, counselor, or school administrator. First, by beginning your scholarship quest early you will be noticed and considered when these nominations are made. Second, your early research may uncover scholarships your teachers aren’t aware exist. If you bring it to their attention and request they nominate you, you’ve just added to your scholarship possibilities. But remember, a teacher won’t nominate you just because  you ask. Teachers will want to nominate those students who’ve shown an interest, in all things scholastic.

Go read about Dulce. Let that story motivate you to continue (or begin) your scholarship preparation and quest. Check in here often for idea and suggestions on improving your scholarship acceptances. If you have any questions feel free to post them. Remember, I can only address scholarship issues in the United States, I know nothing of higher education or scholarships anywhere else in the world.
