The Road to Scholarships

tips and hints for junior high & high school students planning to use scholarship monies to pay for their continuing education

Cost of College

How much will it actually cost you to attend college?

Two websites, one for community colleges, and one for four year universities and colleges will link you to the information you need.

Colleges on both these sites are listed by state. When you click on the college of your interest you will be taken to that college’s website. Once there simply browse to your heart’s content and learn about the college. Most college will have education expenses listed, although you may have to experiment to find exactly where that information is located.

You can find the answers to any questions not answered by their website, by writing, via USPS or email, or calling the college.  All of their contact information can be found on the websites.

The college website will also list of some of the scholarships they offer, if any. Not all colleges offer scholarships. If you are armed with this information early you can intensify your quest for private or government scholarships. Also, they may not list every scholarship their particular college offers, often departments will offer specific scholarships which won’t be listed on the general information page. Again, an email, regular letter, or phone call will help you discover this information.

The community college, and university college link pages are a good way to learn about the different colleges you might think you want to attend. It’s also a good way to learn about other colleges you may not have thought about.

Take the time now to start looking at the colleges and what they have to offer you. This will save you time when you’re a senior and needing to make a choice. By finding out early what’s available, you can narrow your choices down and begin accumulating the funds to attend the college of your choice.

Remember when calculating your college costs to include room & board, transportation costs, books, other supplies, general living expenses in addition to the cost of your tuition and fees.
